Live & E-learning

The first step in building an advisory practice that doesn't

depend on you

The APX Advisory Teams Mentorship

Before you can build an advisory team, you need to understand what great advisory looks like.

The Technician to Advisor Programme is the first stage of the APX Advisory Teams Mentorship. Designed for practice owners and leaders, it helps you move beyond technical thinking and develop the mindset, confidence and communication skills needed to become a trusted advisor.

This isn't about learning more accounting.

It's about learning how to turn financial information into better conversations, better decisions and better outcomes for your clients.

Created by Tim Seymour and Deb Halliday, experienced practice owners who have built and sold their own accountancy and advisory firms.

The transition from technician to advisor doesn't happen by accident

Most accountants and bookkeepers have spent years developing technical expertise

You've learned how to prepare accounts, complete tax returns, manage compliance and ensure accuracy.

But advisory requires a different set of skills.

It requires you to think commercially, communicate clearly, ask better questions and guide business owners through important decisions.

For many professionals, that's the biggest shift they'll make in their career.

The Technician to Advisor Programme has been designed to make that transition practical, structured and achievable.

What you'll learn

The programme is delivered across five practical phases, each building on the last to help you develop the skills and confidence of a trusted advisor.

Phase 1: Technician to Advisor

Every successful advisory firm starts with a leader who understands the difference between technical excellence and commercial advice.

In this first phase, you'll make the shift from technician to trusted advisor, developing the mindset, confidence and commercial thinking needed to lead meaningful client conversations and become the example your team will follow.

Phase 2: Thinking Commercially

Advisory starts with understanding the story behind the numbers.

You'll learn how to think commercially, interpret financial information from the business owner's perspective and identify the opportunities and challenges that matter most. This commercial thinking becomes the foundation for every advisory conversation you lead.

Phase 3: Pricing and Presenting Advisory Services

One of the biggest barriers to advisory is confidently explaining and pricing what you do.

In this phase, you'll learn how to present advisory services in a way that clients understand, communicate the value you deliver and price your services with confidence. You'll develop a structured approach that makes advisory easier to introduce, easier to sell and easier for clients to say yes to.

Phase 4: Leading Strategic Advisory Sessions

Learn how to facilitate structured strategy sessions that help clients move from information to action.

You'll discover how to prepare for advisory meetings, guide meaningful discussions, create accountability and deliver practical outcomes that strengthen client relationships and reinforce your value as a trusted advisor.

Phase 5: Building Authority

The most successful advisors don't wait for opportunities—they create them.

In this final phase, you'll learn how to build your authority through webinars, workshops, group programmes and educational events that position you and your practice as trusted experts. By sharing your knowledge at scale, you'll attract more advisory opportunities, strengthen client relationships and build a practice that's recognised for the value it delivers.

Why practice owners complete this programme first

It creates consistency across the practice and provides the foundation for building an advisory team that delivers a consistent client experience.

Everything is designed to help you move from learning to implementation and from owner-led advisory to team-delivered advisory.

Your Questions Answered

What's the difference between a membership and a mentorship?

A membership gives you access to content and resources to work through at your own pace. A mentorship combines those resources with a structured learning pathway, live workshops, practical implementation, expert guidance and ongoing support to help you apply what you learn and achieve real results. At APX, we focus on transformation, not just access.

Do I need to be delivering advisory already?

No. The pathway supports people moving from technical delivery into advisory, as well as established advisors who now need to build capability across a team.

Can my team join?

Yes. The practice owner or leader completes the programme first to understand and implement the APX methodology. Team members then join and follow the learning pathways relevant to their role.

What happens during the 10-week cohort?

You attend weekly live implementation workshops designed to help you work through the APX pathway, apply the learning and maintain momentum. Replays are available when you cannot attend live.

When do the cohorts run?

Cohorts are planned for:

September to November

February to April

May to July

Can I Join anytime?

Yes.. You'll have access to the full Programme and learning library, monthly Financial Strategy Sessions, community, Polly AI Coach and all resources. The live cohorts are designed to accelerate implementation, but the mentorship and support continue all year round.

What are the Financial Strategy Sessions?

Each month focuses on one practical financial strategy. You’ll complete the e-learning, attend a live workshop, implement the strategy and submit a case study to demonstrate your understanding. Successful completion earns you the relevant APX badge, certificate or accreditation.

What is Polly AI Coach?

Polly is the APX AI learning coach. She is trained around the APX methodology and can help you explore your learning, think through questions and prepare for implementation. She does not replace professional judgement or the live support available through APX.

What is the Business Course Library?

It is a collection of client-facing business education courses that firms can make available to their clients. The library helps clients understand key business concepts, supports advisory conversations and reduces the need to answer the same foundational questions repeatedly.

What is the minimum commitment?

The mentorship has an initial 12-month commitment. After that, it continues on a month-to-month basis.

What happens if I miss a live session?

Cohorts are three times a year and you are free to join any of these whilst your subscription is active. Replays are made available through the APX portal.

Is the training CPD accredited?

Yes the training programmes are CPD accredited

Can I speak to somebody before joining?

Yes. You can book a discovery call with Tim and Deb to discuss your firm, your goals and whether the mentorship is appropriate for you.
